Final - Photoshop

I chose this as my best photoshop. I think it's mostly because I did so little in photoshop thought the year as far as final production. This was spent all in photoshop.
Plus it just worked. I did the assignment. Yay.

Final - Illustrator

I chose this as my best for Illustrator because I put in the most time on it and I feel like I used the proper techniques in creating color shapes. I don't think I have any extra nodes or anything either.
When I find the actual car I will load it instead of the ad.

Final - Creative concept

This is my choice for creative concept because I took the time to actually come up with one. I usually throw together what I can at the last minute but with this I read the guidelines and did the brainstorming and spent time on comps. So I put work into this more than normal.
And even though it is simple, I found I was the only one (in the beta lab) to use cows for ag day and a chili cookoff. Maybe because I'm vegetarian? Who knows?

Final - Best design structure AND Best in InDesign

I enjoy this design structure the most because I feel there is a good hierarchy with the header on page one and the sub header on page two.
I feel that the images are good for attention catching and not distracting. The background on page two is basically just meant for visual texture. I feel like that was accomplished.
I also used the colors from the picture on page one in the headers to help tie it all together.

Also, This is my choice for technical proficiency in InDesign. To me it has decent visual appeal but mostly I did everything by the books as far as I know. Links worked, color modes are right, used columns. I like it.

Final - Best copyfitting

This is my best example of copy fitting for one simple reason, I did it right. With the exception that I forgot about paragraphs after the first one. But other than that I was able to negotiate around the pictures and create even columns AND make everything fit.
So my best copy fitting is the one that worked. For sure.

Final - Best marker comp

I chose this as my best marker comp mainly because it was the cleanest and most accurate comp I have made.
In the final production I ended up re-arranging the voice bubbles and the e-mail but the rest stayed essentially the same. I really tried to take the time to make this one work because we had to create our own graphic and I wanted it to be consistent.

Final Portfolio - One example of my best use of typography

I chose this as my best use of typography mostly because it looks clean to me. I like the two serif fonts chosen because they are very legible. The fact that they are serif makes them legible but still interesting with a little bit of elegance to compliment the violin theme but without having to use a possibly confusing and possibly unnecessary script font.
The left justified body reflects position of the grey box and the right justified headline reflects position of the violin.
I also sort of liked the partial underlining in the headline.

Final Portfolio - One example of my best set of thumbnail color comps

Ok, so I will be completely honest here.
I suck at thumbnails.
I have trouble brainstorming at such an early level. I can make my decisions much better, in my opinion, after I have already started working.
I do see the benefit though, no doubt. If you use them enough they would be a huge help in the preliminary decision making process.

Social Dancing

I think I am satisfied with my final design and layout here. I like the fact that I left the background white considering the content. Seems more... elegant... to me, if we are going to play the stereotypical gender roles I think elegant is appropriate.
My graphic at the top of my first page was too narrow but Rusty hooked me up with some useful tips. I extended it in Photoshop with the clone stamp.
The shoe on the second page was a small, solid graphic in the maker comp, but I went rogue and changed it to the background, transparent, visual texture that you see before you.
And again on Rusty's advice I put the "Art Or Sport" header on the second page, which I definitely approve of. It's effective in tying the two pages together as well as adding some color to page two.
In both headlines I took colors from my graphic on page one.
I'm not convincing myself with the text wrap around the "g" in the page one headline.

Marceline

I actually had a little bit of fun re-creating the Disney graphics. I like to work in Illustrator the most out of all the Adobe programs so fat. I recreated Mickey, Mickey's head, and Donald. Then used the other photos from the provided folder.
I always seem to have trouble fitting in the copy even after my attempts at copy fitting.
If I use this at all in my portfolio, I know I will adjust the text in the quote box by Donald's head.

Dancing Thumbnails

I will be doing the sideways layout in the top right of the picture. I will ad some more color in the headings, pictures, etc.

Car Ad

I decided to use a 64.5 Mustang because it was the car my grandpa had and loved and since I don't pay much attention to cars, it's the only one I've ever actually wanted. So I used it. My concept was the fact that Ford made a 64 Mustang, sold too many, and made more in the middle of the year because of the demand, thus 64.5. So I went with that as a selling point. I only used a partial view of the car and the logo so I could maintain their sizes and still leave room for my text. I had trouble choosing a font and in the end chose a simple, legible one.

*Edit* I also used a white border on the printed version with the "64.5" coming out a little for depth and to solve the bleed issue.

Chili Willie

I kind of liked creating the cow. After printing I felt the poster still needed more black but I'm honestly not sure how I would do that.
Side note: I had a literal case of "my dog ate my homework" with my black foam core mounted version thus I did not turn in a mounted version. I did bring to class a flush mounted on white foam core taped with green painter's tape, although I made the decision not to put that up for display.

Chili Cook Off!

  • Use of a large graphic of a chili pepper as an attention catcher and as a means of creating a theme.
  • Chili based theme shown in title and furthered by the chili graphic.
  • Large heading with all caps, clear, simple, readable font.
  • Use of diagonals to move viewers eye created by the chili pepper and the block of color in the bottom right.
  • Body text at the end of diagonally placed chili leading the eye right to it.
  • Two blocks of color run to the end of the page. There will be no bleed so possibly make the color end early creating a natural border. Unless the intent was to allow the printer to create that border with its lack of a bleed.
  • Not much negative space.
  • Will chili be white/black/grey? 1 color design. Thumbnail shows no indication of a fill. Just curious.
  • Left justify the "OFF" in the title to fit in with the rest of the text.
  • Good breaking-up of the "blocky color" with the curved line at the top to ad visual interest and keep the viewers attention.
  • Watch the text positioning. With no bleed, it could get a little to close to the edge in the final comp.

Banksy

The below link is a website dedicated to the works of Bansky, a semi-anonymous street graphite artist. He is pretty cool so that's why you should support him.

Magazine

These are the original two pages.

These two are the remake. I have too much space between the graphic and the text at the bottom. I also couldn't find an exact match to the header type.
I think the columns are the same width-wise and the photo is the same size as is the header.

Midterm

This was the musician wanted ad. I chose this because it shows the use of clipping paths, objects with drop shadows, and work with font and letter spacing. I added the drop shadow to the clipping path image as well as adding the grey box behind it with a shadow to create depth. I also scaled up the font in the header and the body. The last thing I did was to add a bleed and add the partial underlines to the headline to add emphasis but without using the typical text underline.

These two pages were from our stop smoking pamphlet. I chose these because they are the best example I have that utilizes everything from changing fonts and font sizes to using spot colors and text wraps and pull-quotes as well as using character styles for sub headers and importing pictures and using a grid. I made some minor changes to the positioning of the sub headers and text boxes as well as scaling up the newsletter title.

This is my photoshop fix project. I chose to make some slight touchups around the neck area before posting but that was all I changed.

I chose this for my first illustrator choice because it was one of my most successful attempts at recreating accurately what we were given. The things I chose to change include removing a few outlines around specific shapes, adjusting the colors to resemble the original more, and reshaping some of the color shapes.
This is my second choice from Illustrator. I was able to match the outer color on the gradient of the circle with the background color in the original version but one of the things I changed before using this in my midterm portfolio was adjusting the background to a darker color that more resembled the original. So I also changed the outer color of the circle to match the new background. After that I went through and rearranged the berries a little bit and lightened the inside of the circle a little as well.

This is...

....my first post.
